Pagnol, Marcel

Pagnol, Marcel
(1895-1974)
   writer, dramatist
Born in Aubagne, Marcel Pagnol left his career as a professor of English after his debut as a dramatic author (Les Marchands de gloire, 1925), then turned to the avant-garde (Jazz, 1926), preferring naturalism, with his comedy on morality, Topaze (1928). His subsequent sophisticated and melodramatic trilogy about workers on the Marseille waterfront—Mar-ius (1931), Fanny (1932), and César (1936)—brought him international fame and were made into films. Among Pagnol's other works are Angèle (1934), Regain (1937), and La Femme de boulanger (1939). He returned to the stage with Judas (1955) and Fabien (1956), and published a trilogy on memories of his childhood and youth also made into films. Pagnol was elected to the Académie Française in 1946.
